Dead centre

The photograph was taken in Stepney Street, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, Wales, but it could have been taken in any one of over a hundred towns in the UK, where the town centre is in terminal decline – retail outlets having moved out to out-of-town shopping centres. Meanwhile the town planners site in their offices like eunuchs at an orgy.

The word that comes to mind as I look at this scene is ‘forlorn’. I think you’ve done an excellent job of conveying that emotion.

The same thing happened in my hometown, where more and more of the outlying areas were annexed, then everything moved away from downtown to the new shiny malls that were built in the newly annexed areas.

In 1999, an F-4 tornado razed downtown. In actuality, it was the best thing that could have happened. The downtown area was either re-built or cleared … the wheat was separated from the chaff. Downtown is now experiencing a renaissance.

    It can happen.
